In the recent past, HLK has upgraded the LD2412 with a hardware model number LD2412S, which is claimed to have better antenna performance and better static detection capability.

We synchronized the latest LD2412S hardware and tried to incorporate the BH1750 light sensor (also used on the 2A), we call this upgraded L13.

The L13 has the same clean form factor as the L12, with easy access to HA capability.

The HLK-LD2412 has some nice enhancements to the LD2410 (we use it for a range of our radars, such as the 1U, 1WX, 1MS, etc.):

  • Better antenna design
  • Larger coverage area
  • Better static capability
  • The included light module is also better at performing in low light.
  • Up to 13 gate detections means you can fine-tune the sensitivity of certain gates by filtering them.
  • With three resolutions (0.25m, 0.5m, 0.75m), compared to the LD2410, there are 0.5m more.

In our tests, we also found some shortcomings:

  • The shortest detection distance showed a large numerical error, and the HLK developers explained that the ranging aspect of the radar was weakened in favour of enhanced overall radar detection.
  • The response time is a bit slower than the Gen1 series (based on the LD2410C, say 1MS), maybe 2-3 seconds in some cases.

This is a new adventure and we invite more people to join it. We have assembled the Human Sensor L13 with the ESP32-C3 and the LD2412s, we have tweaked the firmware, and through the co-operation with the HLK developers and after almost 2 months of internal testing, we now have the opportunity to invite people to join this new adventure.
